Abstract

Objective: To estimate the value of breastfeeding time in Mexico considering mothers' participation and the challenges they face, specially working mothers.Methodology: A model of the value of time based on the producing household is used and estimated using an unordered multinomial logit model. Results: The average value of monthly time spent breastfeeding is $850.6 for mothers who work and breastfeed, and $915.4 for those who do not work.Limitations: The main limitation is that the survey used only reports the monthly frequency of breastfeeding, thus preventing estimation of the value of breastfeeding in hours.Originality: This research offers the first estimate of the value of breastfeeding time in Mexico, taking female participation into account. Conclusions: The results reflect the need for policies that recognize the economic value of breastfeeding, encouraging and facilitating its practice within the labor market.
